Based on the life of Scottish settler Marjorie “Mysie” MacDonald (1828-1906) – a story of incredible courage, iron will determination and unshakable faith

At the age of eight years, Marjorie “Mysie” MacDonald, with her parents and five siblings, arrived at Scotch Settlement, New Brunswick on November 25, 1836, one family in a group of 45 Gaelic speaking families from the Isle of Skye, Scotland. With snow on the ground, the temperature well below zero and contrary to what the settlers had been promised by the NB and NS Land Co., there was no cleared land, there was no food to tide them over winter and there was no log cabin - there was just 100 acres of thick forest. Forty eight of their group died from starvation, hypothermia or disease during the winter of 1836-7, including Mysie’s father. It would have been a lot worse had they not been supported by local communities, people themselves who had little to spare. Armed with an iron will, she was able to survive the unsurvivable and make a life for herself, relying on personal strengths, innovation and her unshakable faith.
